Abdullah Becomes King of Jordan
Abdullah Bin Hussein became king of Jordan automatically after his father King Hussein died at 11:43 local time (0943 GMT) Saturday losing a seven-month battle against cancer.
"The kingship was transferred constitutionally to Crown Prince Abdullah ... in view of His Majesty King Hussein's death" said a cabinet statement.
A formal swearing-in ceremony before parliament and cabinet will be held at 15:00 local time (1300 GMT) for the new Jordanian monarch, the government announced.
Abdullah has been performing, as the regent, with all constitutional powers of a Jordanian king since Saturday morning, including the rights of declaring war, signing international treaties, dissolving the parliament and appointing a new government.
The crown prince went on the screen to speak to the Jordanians and all the Arab nations, praying for the eternal rest of the soul of King Hussein and God's blessing to him.
A majestic funeral will be held for the region's longest-serving leader and world leaders will be present to mourn the advocate for Middle East peace.
